DHCP Server Solutions

DHCP Server

Wireless Dimensions offers several Linux based security solutions to help protect bandwidth and networks against external threats while also maintaining internal control to prevent misuse of the company networks. Known as WDGuard, the solution includes a DHCP server and Intrusion detection. In addition to the DHCP server, firewall control and PPPoE are also offered as part of the solution.

Understanding how it server works

It stands for Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol which is a network protocol allowing for the automatic assignment of IP addresses to the TCP/IP stack software of client workstations or computers. A specific range of numbers is assigned for the particular networks.

The DHCP server sets addresses automatically, which takes care of the need for a static IP address or addresses specifically configured for the DNS servers. By assigning the address with the start-up of the system, the specific computer can place a broadcasting request which is directed by a router to the relevant DHCP server. This is called a DISCOVER packet.

Availability and usage rules are already defined on the server. The packet will be answered accordingly and a temporary IP is allocated. By letting the server know of the plan to use the specific address the client computer receives a reservation spot. The server answers through a confirmation packet that the client computer has been given use of the address for a specific period.

Manual static IP address allocation often result in two computers being assigned the same IP, in which case service is denied. By making use of the server to assign IP addresses temporary, problems when computers have been manually configured for static IP addresses, can be overcome.

Wireless Dimensions provides several protection measures in addition to the above such as bandwidth protection and firewall control mentioned earlier. In addition, the WDGuard provides a high level of network management control.

Bandwidth and surfing control

Bandwidth protection is obtained through the monitoring of bandwidth usage - daily, weekly and monthly. You will be able to see how much bandwidth has been used for music, games, and downloads. By making use of the log system you can identify sites not associated with work and either block these sites or show the graphs to the specific users when discussing company policies. Other measures can be taken to reduce unproductive surfing behaviour such as URL filtering, advance proxy server and limiting access to the Internet to the use of specific sites and email.

Email protection

The full email server can act as a normal mail server or used behind an exchange server to act as spam filter. WDGuard also makes it possible to view email anywhere in the world through the Internet.

The automatic spam filtering, anti-virus features, intrusion detection, dynamic DNS, full firewall control, email server and spam control as well as a DHCP server, all work together to ensure that you can manage your network effectively without the fear of external and internal threats.
